Record oil price per barrel. What the hell is a barrel in volume?

What would my $140 buy? 10 gallons? 40 litres? A couple of pints?

Somebody please inform me what this international unit of oil really is - cuz no-one ever says so.

It might as well be a pig's bladder full for all I care.

Ta everso my Q%26amp;A chums.Record oil price per barrel. What the hell is a barrel in volume?
A barrel contains 42 US gallons (34.972 Imperial gallons or 158.987 L) . After refining, it makes about 19.5 gallons of gasoline along with other items such as home heating oil, kerosene, diesel, etc. This is an estimate, as different oil from different countries yield different amounts of finished product depending on the cost to refine, and distillability. However this is a good estimate of worldwide production.Record oil price per barrel. What the hell is a barrel in volume?
A barrel of oil is 50 gallons of oil. That is 'crude' oil, by the way, not gasoline ... the crude oil needs to be refined to make gasoline and other oil-based products. You do NOT get fifty gallons of gasoline from 50 gallons of crude oil, but I'm not sure how much you do get ... probably 25 gallons or fewer, plus the 'other stuff' they make into things like plastics, car oil, etc.

A gallon is four quarts. A quart is four cups of 8 ounces each.
At 42 gallons, it comes to about $3.09/gallon before any profit, tax, refining, transporting and other considerations. I don't want to know about these factors. What I want to know is how come the oil producing countries are all paying way less than the rest of the world? I am talking about less than $1/gallon less. Lack of supply? I think not! Control of supply and greed are more like it. It's time, until we have widely available and very economic alternative energy sources, for us to get our own! It's time to drill!
50 gallons per barrel of oil or 42 gallons of crude oil which is used to make gas. takes 2.1 gallons to make 1 gallons of gasoline. so for 140 get 20 gallons of gas. when spread world wide, the us paying a very low price compared to most of the world. which averages out to about 13 dollars a gallon of oil,

you profit around 80 dollars a barrel.
The USA gallons and UK gallons differ quite significantly, I'll post rather than explain, if you don't mind. (seems easier and rather less complicated)

Reasons et al., included.
No one has got it quite right, a barrel of crude oil is 42 US Gallons, which is equivelant to 34.97(two dec. places) Imperial or UK Gallons, which is equivelant to 158.98 (two dec. places) Litres.
When talking about barrels of oil as a quantity of oil the volume is 42 US gallons. Actual oil drums hold 55 US gallons.
42 gallons
It's around 55 gallons (UK %26amp; US gallons differ) and originates from the early days when oil was transported in wooden barrels.

$140 can buy 42 gallons/159 litres of light sweet crude.
According to my husband a former Oil Company employee it is 42 gallons.
I think it's 45 imperial gallons. (About 205 litres?)

And don't forget a US gallon is different from an imperial gall.

Elvis told me that he sold 140 barrels of oil for food. he got one hot dog, I told him they cheated you! He said Naw, it was one barrel.
